The Fear Of God

If there is one thing lacking in these last days it is the fear of God. The respect and honor for God is diminishing among many. Jesus did warn us and said in Matthew 24:12: “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” We see how the love that many had for God begins to die away. They were serving God with great zeal but because of the trials and tribulations they get discouraged.

The only way to continue in zeal for God is to understand the fear of God. The fear of God is basically a revelation of Him. We can’t start walking in the life that God gives us until we are walking righteously. We can’t walk righteously if we can’t turn away from evil. We can’t turn away from evil unless we have a revelation of God— the fear of God.

WHAT THE FEAR OF GOD IS NOT

1 – The fear of God is not a tormenting, demonic fear.

KJV 2 Timothy 1:7
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

We are not to be scared of God but have a reverence for Him. We know that He loves us and that He will discipline us when we need it. The fear of God is a reverence to God in that we respect what He says to us even when the truth hurts. We have to understand that God will not give us more than we can bear (1 Corithians 10:13).

KJV 1 John 4:18
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

We need to know by personal revelation the love of God. When we get a personal revelation of the love of God it will not always feel good to hear the truth spoken to us in love or to get disciplined by the Lord. We have to receive His word no matter what and not be scared but be reverent to God.

2 – The fear of God is not a religious fear

KJV Isaiah 29:13
13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

It’s not about works. The fear of God is not about guilt and condemnation. If we get caught up in works then we will feel guilty and condemned when we can’t fulfill all the works.

KJV Luke 1:74
74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, 75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

God doesn’t want us to feel guilty and condemned because Jesus came to remove all guilt and condemnation (Romans 8:1).

THE FOUNDATION OF THE FEAR OF GOD

The fear of God is based on a revelation of God. When we know who God is we will respect and honor Him. In order to even begin to have the fear of God we need to:

KJV Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

1 – Believe that He exists; that He is.

The first step is to have faith in God. We can’t be saved unless we have faith in God. We are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8).

2 – Believe that He is a good God and brings rewards those who diligently seek Him.

KJV Romans 8:28
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

The second step is to believe that God is a good God. Many don’t believe that God has our good in mind. Many think that God is just out to punish us for our sins, but that is a lie that Satan would like you to believe. God does have rewards for us, but it is for “those who diligently seek Him.” God rewards those who don’t give up at every problem that arises.

WHAT THE FEAR OF GOD IS

1 – Knowing God personally

KJV John 17:3
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

The word know in this verse literally means “learn to know, through personal experience” (Dictionary of Biblical Languages: NT Greek: 1182). We are to know God personally through experience. Many times we don’t stick long enough with God to experience His power and presence in our lives. We think that we have served God for one week and we already make a determination about our relationship with Him. It takes time to really begin to experience God in every area of our lives.

You can see this mentality in action through people who get into a relationship and believe that they already know that person over a small period of time. They get married and begin to find out other things that they never knew and soon after want a divorce. That is part of the reason why there is a high divorce rate not only among those that are not saved but also among those who are saved. The rate is basically the same in those who are saved and those who are not.

Many times we don’t stick with Him long enough to know Him. You will see many people that go from church to church because they are not willing to push through the trials and tribulations that they face. We have the “Walmart” mentality where if we don’t like it then we return it for a refund. Relationships don’t work that way, especially knowing God. We have to be willing to stick with Him no matter what we face because He is faithful to us.

2 – Hating evil

KJV Proverbs 8:13
13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

We are to hate what God hates and stay away from pride. Jesus gives us the strength to overcome evil. What is evil is revealed to us through the word and the Spirit. Once we know what is evil we are to stay away from it.

3 – Taught to us by God

KJV Isaiah 29:13
13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

The fear of God can not be taught by men but by God through the Spirit and His word.

RESULTS OF THE FEAR OF GOD

1 – We will be blessed – Psalm 128
2 – Holiness is perfected – 2 Corinthians 7:1
3 – God shows us His covenant – Psalm 25:14
4 – Hate evil – Proverbs 8:13
5 – Wisdom – Proverbs 1:7
6 – Multiplication – Acts 9:31
7 – Turn from evil – Proverbs 16:6

The fear of God will open up God’s power and presence in our lives. When we truly walk in the fear of God we are able to stand up against the trials and tribulations that come in our lives. Start to develop today the fear of God in your life by:
1 – Knowing God
2 – Hating evil
3 – Be taught by God
