A Song of Ascents. Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways. (Psalm 128:1 NKJV)
We are living in a time where many have forgotten what it is to fear the Lord. Many have a wrong concept of the fear of God. There are blessings when we have the fear of God. So what is the fear of God?
The fear of God is:
1 – Knowing God personally
KJV John 17:3
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
The word know in this verse literally means “learn to know, through personal experience” (Dictionary of Biblical Languages: NT Greek: 1182). We are to know God personally through experience. Many times we don’t stick long enough with God to experience His power and presence in our lives. We think that we have served God for one week and we already make a determination about our relationship with Him. It takes time to really begin to experience God in every area of our lives.
You can see this mentality in action through people who get into a relationship and believe that they already know that person over a small period of time. They get married and begin to find out other things that they never knew and soon after want a divorce. That is part of the reason why there is a high divorce rate not only among those that are not saved but also among those who are saved. The rate is basically the same in those who are saved and those who are not.
Many times we don’t stick with Him long enough to know Him. You will see many people that go from church to church because they are not willing to push through the trials and tribulations that they face. We have the Walmart mentality where if we don’t like it then we return it for a refund. Relationships don’t work that way, especially knowing God. We have to be willing to stick with Him no matter what we face because He is faithful to us.
2 – Hating evil
KJV Proverbs 8:13
13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
We are to hate what God hates and stay away from pride. Jesus gives us the strength to overcome evil. What is evil is revealed to us through the word and the Spirit. Once we know what is evil we are to stay away from it.
3 – Taught to us by God
KJV Isaiah 29:13
13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far
from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
The fear of God can not be taught by men but by God through the Spirit and His word.
I really want to challenge you to seek God’s word on the fear of the Lord. Make sure to read next week’s blog as I explain about what happens when we have the fer of God.
